Introducation

For three weeks, every night at exactly 12:07 a.m., someone knocked on the front door of an empty house.

The strange part was that nobody lived there.

Mara Ellis knew this because she had been hired to prepare the house for sale. The previous owner had died suddenly, leaving behind an old two-story property at the edge of town. The house had been empty for nearly six months.

Yet every night, at the same minute, the knocking returned.

Three slow knocks.

Then silence.

Mara initially blamed the wind, loose branches, or an old pipe. But on the fourth night, she decided to stay awake and find out who—or what—was behind it.

The Empty House

The house belonged to an elderly man named Arthur Bell, who had lived there alone for almost forty years.

Neighbors remembered him as quiet but polite. He rarely had visitors, and according to his will, the house was supposed to be sold after his death.

Mara spent her days cleaning dusty rooms, opening curtains, and sorting through old belongings.

One room on the second floor bothered her more than the others.

It was a narrow study with faded wallpaper and a locked wooden cabinet.

The cabinet had no key.

The First Night

On her fourth night working late, Mara heard it.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

She froze.

The clock on the kitchen wall showed 12:07.

She walked toward the front door and looked through the window.

The porch was empty.

She opened the door.

Cold air moved across the floor.

Nobody was outside.

Mara stepped onto the porch and looked down the road.

Nothing.

Then she noticed something strange.

There were three wet footprints on the wooden porch.

They stopped directly in front of the door.

There were no footprints leading toward the porch.

A Strange Discovery

The following morning, Mara asked the neighbor, Mr. Harris, whether he knew anything about the nightly knocking.

His face changed immediately.

“You heard it too?” he asked.

Mara nodded.

Mr. Harris lowered his voice.

“Arthur used to say someone would come back for something.”

“What something?”

“I never asked.”

That answer stayed with Mara all day.

Later, she returned to the locked cabinet.

After several attempts, she managed to force it open.

Inside was a small cassette recorder, several photographs, and a handwritten notebook.

The first page contained only one sentence:

“If you hear the knocking, do not open the door after midnight.”

Mara felt a chill run through her.

The Notebook

The notebook belonged to Arthur.

Most of the pages described ordinary things—weather, household repairs, grocery lists.

But the final pages were different.

Arthur had written about a man named Daniel.

Daniel had supposedly visited the house thirty years earlier.

He had been looking for his younger brother, who had disappeared as a teenager.

Arthur claimed he knew what had happened to him.

But he never explained what he meant.

The final entry was dated two days before Arthur’s death.

“He knows I kept the truth. If I am gone, the house will remember.”

Mara read the sentence several times.

Then she heard a sound upstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

The Hidden Room

Mara slowly climbed the stairs.

The study door was open.

She was certain she had closed it.

Inside, she noticed a section of wallpaper that looked newer than the rest.

She pulled it away.

Behind it was a narrow wooden door.

The door opened into a tiny hidden room.

Inside stood an old chair, a dusty lamp, and a metal box.

The box contained a collection of letters.

They were written by Daniel.

The letters revealed the truth.

Daniel’s younger brother, Samuel, had not disappeared.

He had accidentally died while exploring an abandoned mine near the town.

Arthur had discovered the body.

But instead of reporting the accident, he panicked.

He had been afraid that people would blame him because he had allowed the boys to explore the property.

He secretly buried Samuel’s belongings and kept silent.

Daniel spent decades believing Samuel might still be alive.

Arthur had carried the guilt for the rest of his life.

The Final Knock

That night, Mara decided not to leave.

At 12:06, the house became completely silent.

At 12:07—

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Mara stood in the hallway.

This time, she did not open the door.

Instead, she looked through the window.

A man stood on the porch.

He was elderly, wearing a dark coat.

Mara recognized him from one of the photographs.

It was Daniel.

He looked directly at the house.

Then he placed something on the doorstep and walked away.

Mara waited several minutes before opening the door.

On the doorstep was a small envelope.

Inside was a note.

“Arthur finally told me everything before he died. I didn’t want revenge. I only wanted my brother’s name remembered.”

The knocking never happened again.

What Was Really Causing the Knocking?

The following week, Mara learned something unexpected.

The old front door had a damaged wooden panel. Whenever the temperature dropped sharply at night, the wood contracted and struck the metal frame three times.

The mysterious knocking had a perfectly ordinary explanation.

But there was one detail nobody could explain.

The three wet footprints.

It had not rained that night.

And according to Mr. Harris, Daniel had died in his sleep two days before Mara found the envelope.

Conclusion

The house was eventually sold.

The hidden room was demolished during renovations, and Samuel’s belongings were finally given to his remaining family.

Mara never forgot those nights.

She often told herself that every mystery had a logical explanation.

Maybe the knocking was simply old wood.

Maybe the footprints had been left by someone she never saw.

Or maybe, after decades of silence, the house had found a way to make sure the truth was finally heard.

And sometimes, Mara still woke at exactly 12:07 a.m.

For three seconds, she would lie perfectly still.

Listening.

Waiting for three knocks that never came.
